OUR TEAM SPECIALISES IN TREATING AND REPAIRING ANY DENTAL TRAUMA IN SYDNEY
In the event of dental trauma from falls, sports, accidents or biting on hard food, teeth can often break or even fall out. If this occurs, it is crucial to get to a dentist as soon as possible — within an hour is the best timeframe for the tooth’s survival. If Oatlands Dental isn’t open, we advise that you visit a hospital emergency department as quickly as possible.
If a tooth breaks, try locating the broken piece and bringing it to our clinic, as we can often bond it back to the tooth. If a tooth appears to be knocked but not broken, looks longer, shorter or tilted, please visit us as soon as possible, as there may be damage to the tooth root or the surrounding bone.
If a tooth is knocked out, never touch the tooth’s root. Instead, handle the tooth by the crown (top of the tooth). Following this, determine whether it is a baby or adult tooth and call our clinic to notify us that you’re on your way. If the tooth is dirty, briefly wash it with milk, saline or cold running water for no longer than 10 seconds. If you have determined that it is an adult tooth, try to put the tooth back into its gap and advise the injured person to bite on a handkerchief or gauze to hold the tooth in place.
If you’re unsure if the tooth is a baby or adult tooth, or the tooth can’t be placed back in its gap, it can be transported to our clinic in several ways. These include a glass of milk, a glass of the injured person’s saliva held inside the cheek and gum of the injured person’s mouth or a dedicated storage medium for knocked-out teeth. Do not store the tooth in water.
Please be aware that there is a significant chance that the tooth’s nerve could be damaged, resulting in a need for more extensive treatment from our Sydney-based emergency dental team.
HOW WE TREAT DENTAL TRAUMA AT OATLANDS DENTAL
We offer a range of emergency dental services in Sydney to manage urgent issues, relieve pain and help your teeth and gums heal properly. Depending on the situation, our dentists may recommend:
- Fracture repairs
For cracked, chipped or broken teeth, we offer a range of repair options. These may include composite bonding, fillings or a dental crown, depending on how much of the tooth is affected. We also take X-rays to check for root damage or fractures below the gum. Treating fractures early helps avoid infection and protects the tooth from further damage.
- Root canal therapy
If trauma exposes or damages the nerve inside a tooth, a root canal may be needed to save it. This treatment involves removing the damaged tissue, cleaning the space inside the tooth and sealing it. It’s often followed by a crown to restore strength and function. Root canal therapy helps relieve pain and stops infection from spreading.
- Splinting of loose teeth
When a tooth has been pushed out of place or feels loose, we can stabilise it using a small splint. This holds the tooth steady by attaching it to nearby teeth, allowing the bone and ligament around it to heal. It’s a simple and effective way to support natural healing after impact. We’ll monitor your progress closely over the coming weeks.
- Treatment for soft tissue injuries
Damage to the gums, lips, cheeks or tongue needs careful cleaning to avoid infection. We assess the wound and stop any bleeding, and in some cases may place stitches to help the healing. Even small cuts should be checked in case there’s hidden damage beneath the surface. We’ll also give you clear instructions for managing the area at home.
- Temporary and long-term restorations
If part of the tooth is lost or can’t be repaired immediately, we can place a temporary filling or crown for protection. This gives you relief while we plan a more permanent solution like a crown, bridge or implant. We’ll talk you through the options and explain what’s needed for long-term success. Our aim is always to restore both function and appearance.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM OUR SYDNEY-BASED EMERGENCY DENTAL TEAM
When you call, we will ask a few key questions to assess how urgent the issue is. This allows us to prioritise your care and prepare for your arrival if needed. If it turns out to be an urgent matter, we’ll make sure you’re seen without delay.
At your appointment, we’ll carry out a thorough examination of the injury. This may include taking X-rays or other scans to get a full picture of the damage. We’ll explain what we find and recommend a treatment plan based on what you need most at that moment — whether that’s stabilising a tooth, managing infection or beginning a repair.
From start to finish, we’ll make sure you understand what’s happening and what to expect next. We’ll provide any necessary follow-up instructions and help you plan any future visits if more treatment is needed. Our team is here to make the experience as clear and manageable as possible, even in the middle of an emergency.
